I am the wife to an amazing man, mother of two beautiful girls, and homemaker dedicated to feeding my family nutritious food in order to have a full and healthy life. I want to run around with my daughter when I am 40 and go on hikes with my family when I am 60 or 70 years old. I believe that what you eat has a direct correlation on how you feel and can prevent many of the diseases that are so common today (diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, etc).
After getting on board with many of the food fads and trends, I finally found a way of eating that works with our lifestyle, gives me energy all day long, and is backed by thousands of years of human consumption. When my husband and I got married in 2008 we started eating “healthier”: whole wheat, low calorie, low fat, 6 small meals a day, etc., but to no avail. We were both doing cardio like crazy and eating this so called “healthy” diet and felt awful. To top it off, Craig has Psoriatic Arthritis and was taking up to four medications daily and one every other week. Being only in his mid 20s we knew this couldn’t be good in the long term. Somehow we came across Mark’s daily apple and decided to read his book called the Primal Blueprint. From there it was history. Being a science major in college, I appreciated the in-depth, yet easy to understand, explanations of the way humans have eaten for thousands of years and should be eating still today.
In 2010 we decided to take steps to cutting out wheat in our diet. This was a big deal since I was a cereal junkie. But, I realized that a great way to stop eating something is to not buy it! So that was step #1, no more cereal. The rest just seemed to fall into place and over time we started craving the more fatty (tastier) food over the now bland grain products. The missing link was FAT! We were depriving ourselves of the key ingredient in our food chain. Once we added more good fats and protein to our diet, the results were immediate.
Craig came off all of his medications except one in just a matter of a few months (we are hoping to cut out the last one soon – praying his x-rays show good results in December 2012!). I now don’t get shaky if I don’t eat every few hours (and I have regular monthly cycles and got pregnant within 5 months of the Primal switch!). We both have more energy and feel physically better than any other point in our life.
We are not perfectly primal, but we use that word because we follow the framework of the primal diet. We are not so much worried about “what the cavemen would have eaten”, but what makes us feel better and be more able to serve God to the best of our abilities. I am not an expert on nutrition and do not give medical advice, but I hope that this blog is a place where you can find helpful, practical knowledge about the primal way of living as you watch our family make the primal switch amidst the chaos of the modern world and conventional wisdom.
